Aboyne lies on the north side of the River Dee on the A93, mid-way between Ballater and Banchory, in what is known as Royal Deeside.

The village has evolved around the village green, venue for the Aboyne Highland Games, held annually. The town has a wide range of facilities that include an 18-hole Golf course, Bowling green, all weather Tennis courts, Fishing, Shooting, Water skiing and Gliding.
