Alexandria sits on the River Leven just a couple of miles south of Loch Lomond, and a few miles north of the Firth of Clyde, in West Dumbartonshire. This typically Scottish rural town grew in the 19th century until it finally joined up with neighbouring Jamestown and Balloch.
The town is well known for the Argll Motor Works which was the largest car production plant in Europe between 1905 and 1913; it now it houses a motor museum.
