Alness (population 4,921) is a town in the Ross and Cromarty district of Scotland. The name is of Norse origin and refers to the promontory on which it is situated. Modern Alness is noted for its numerous Britain in Bloom awards (winning the first Champion of Champions award in 2006), which reflects how the town is favoured by both the eastern climate and strong community bonds. The community spirit is also evident in the number of social clubs that organise everything from martial arts and swimming to scrabble and bird watching, with many leisure opportunities for children.
Secondary education is provided at Alness Academy whilst there are eight primary schools in the vicinity. Alness is a forward looking town with a strong business community and a significant number of environmental organisations.
The Alness website has lots more information about the area.
