Dalkeith lies 8 miles South East of Edinburgh on the River South Esk, in the county of Midlothian.
The town has a population of around 12,000. Historically the town's economy was based upon grain milling and cattle but, today, industry is more diverse with employers including Letts’ Diaries, Laidlaw printers and bookbinders, and Fairgrieve wool-spinners. It also has a large 24 hour Tesco supermarket.
It is an ancient market town which has developed into a modern commercial, retail and residential centre, although, it is also a good base from which to explore the nearby Pentland and Moorfoot hills which are very popular with walkers.
The name Dalkeith derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'Dail Cheith' which means ''valley with the wood'. The town's motto is 'Once the Keeper, always the Defender'.
