Property in Fort William

Fort William (population 9,652) is located at the head of Loch Linnhe: a large sea loch that flows in from the Atlantic on the West Coast of Scotland. Due to its Western location, the region has significant contacts with the rebellious western clans of Scotland, but ironically the town of Fort William grew up around a garrison imposed on the region, which was named after William of Orange. This monarch became infamous in Scotland for consenting to the massacre of nearby Glencoe, in which Fort William played a role.

Despite some tragic episodes in its history, modern Fort William is a dynamic town with the highest population in the Western Highlands. Lochaber High School in Fort-William provides secondary education, whilst there are numerous primary schools in the town. Cultural resources include the West Highland Museum as well as a public library.

Fort William’s proximity to Glencoe and Ben Nevis (Britain’s highest mountain) offer many leisure opportunities. Cycling, hill-walking and sea kayaking provide the region with a strong tourism economy as well as many opportunities to keep fit. Fort William is also relatively close to the city of Glasgow and has a rail network leading to the central belt as well as north to the West Coast of Scotland.

For more information about the area, see the Visit Fort William website.
