The city of Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands. Glasgow was known as the "Second City of the British Empire" for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period but today it is one of Europe's top ten financial centres and is home to many of Scotland's leading businesses. Glasgow is also ranked as the 57th most liveable city in the world.

The city centre is bounded by the High Street to the east, the River Clyde to the south and the M8 motorway to the west and north which links the city via a network of roads and motorways to other parts of Scotland.

Glasgow has a large urban transport system including an underground system, mostly managed by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. There is also an extensive bus network with the main bus terminal situated in central Buchanan bus station. In addition, Glasgow has excellent rail transport facilities as well as the most extensive urban rail network in the UK outside of London with rail services travelling to a large part of the West of Scotland.
Glasgow airport is just a few miles from the city centre and Prestwick airport is only about 30 miles away.

The city operates well over 100 primary schools, has numerous high schools and four universities.
