Located in the Eastern Scottish Highlands, Grantown on Spey (population 2,300) came into being as a planned village in 1765. To this day it retains much architecture from Georgian and Victorian times as well as large tracts of woodlands. The town enjoys proximity to Aviemore and the Cairngorms, which provides the region with a strong tourism and hospitality industry. Grantown is a centre of outdoor activities in its own right, with tracks for mountain-biking and hill-walking.
As well as providing outdoor activities, Grantown is a hub of social activity, from bridge clubs and amateur dramatic societies to a mothers and toddlers group. The town possesses a library, a primary school and grammar school. Kingussie High School provides comprehensive education. Grantown Museum is a valuable resource for culture and heritage.
