Kingussie (Population 1,400) is located in Strathspey and its name means ‘head of the pine forest’ as it was once surrounded by pine trees. It is close to Ruthven Barracks which possibly occupies the site of a castle belonging to The Wolf of Badenoch. This dark figure once raided the cultivated East Coast of Scotland from his isolated lair.
Today, Kingussie is well integrated into Scotland thanks to the Strathspey Railway and the A9 and A86 roads. It possesses a primary and secondary school as well as a large number of sports clubs. Kincraig Wildlife Park is a local attraction, where animals which once thrived in Scotland are kept in a protected environment. There are many outdoor activities available, ranging from golf to pony trekking and hill walking. Kingussie benefits from the rain-shadow of the Highland mountain range and from its proximity to the Cairngorms, which provides it with tourism revenue.
