Kirkcaldy is approximately 18.6 miles North of Edinburgh and 44.4 miles South-SouthWest of Dundee. In 2008, the town had an estimated population of 48,630, making it the biggest settlement in Fife. The town's main attractions include a museum, theatre and an annual market regarded as the largest fairground in Scotland.
Kirkcaldy's town centre, which serves a large catchment area of around 130,000 residents within a 20-minute drive, is the largest in Fife in terms of floor space. The High Street, which runs parallel to the Esplanade, is home to the Mercat Shopping Centre and Postings Shopping Centre. A regeneration programme to upgrade the appearance of the High Street was completed in late 2011. A separate project has also created a 'green corridor' to link the main railway station and bus station with the High Street.
Kirkcaldy has four secondary schools and twelve primary schools. Other educational facilities include a private school and a school for children with learning difficulties.[
The A92, which connects Dunfermline to the west with Glenrothes and Dundee to the north, passes immediately north of Kirkcaldy. The main route through the north of the town, the B981, runs roughly parallel to and one kilometre to the south of the A92. The Kirkcaldy railway station offers regular services to locations such as Perth, Aberdeen, and Inverness to the north and Newcastle Central, York, and London King's Cross to the south.
