Kyle of Lochalsh (population 800)
This town’s name is of Gaelic origin and means ‘strait of the foaming lake’, which demonstrates both its connections to the Celtic West of Scotland as well as the local topography, which is defined by the waterways that connect and separate the outer Hebrides and the Western Highlands.
Because of its proximity to the Hebrides, Kyle of Lochalsh benefits greatly from the tourist trade both in its local economy and in its infrastructure and services. Regular train and bus transport is readily available whilst there are ferry services to neighbouring islands.
As well as having a developed transport network, Kyle of Lochalsh has a primary school, whilst older pupils are educated in neighbouring Plockton High School.
The Lochalsh website has lots more information about the area.
