Laurencekirk is the principal town of the 'Howe o'the Mearns', south of Stonehaven just off the Dundee to Aberdeen main road. The soil around Laurencekirk is noted for its rich red colour signifying rich agricultural land.
Laurencekirk was developed into a planned village in the 1770's with the introduction of handloom weaving (still in existence today) and the manufacture of snuff boxes. The products produced were of such high quality that they became famous and were supplied to royal households.
Today, Laurencekirk, in addition to agricultural engineering, has a good range of community services, shops, garages, banks etc.
