Orkney (population 20,000)

The Orkney Isles are an archipelago situated off the North East Coast of Scotland. Whilst the population is centred on the Orkney mainland which contains Kirkwall and Stromness, the Orkney Isles consist of 70 islands, though only 20 of these are inhabited. The region was inhabited by the Picts who left standing stones and other archaeological treasures before falling under Norse influence. Whilst the Norse had a strong influence throughout Northern Scotland, Orkney retained far more of a Norse heritage than most places. Their influence can be seen from the Medieval Cathedral of Saint Magnus as well as many local place names.

Modern Orkney retains much of its Norse past, but is a forward looking archipelago with a strong tourist industry. There are many shops and restaurants on the island as well as a regular ferry service from the mainland. The council operates a road network within the individual islands as well as providing funding for the schools.

Two secondary schools in Kirkwall and Stromness provide education for the archipelago’s older children, whilst there are 17 primary schools scattered throughout the islands. The council also operates six swimming pools. Two of these are in the mainland of Orkney (Stromness and Kirkwall) whilst the others are located on the islands of Westray, Sanday, Stronsay and North Walls.

The Visit Orkney website has lots more information about the area.
