Portlethen lies approximately 7 miles south of Aberdeen and has easy access to Aberdeen City by dual carriageway. It has expanded rapidly over the last 20 years mainly due to the North Sea Oil Industry.

Portlethen is protected by green belt to the north and south, including the Portlethen Moss. Short distances to the east of Portlethen are Findon, Downies and Old Portlethen, which are all picturesque coastal villages.

Portlethen has an expanding Industrial Estate, which includes major oil companies, a good range of out-of-town retailing, including Asda Superstore and DIY stores.
