Portree (population 1,886) is the major settlement on the Isle of Skye and is one of the most significant towns in the Inner Hebrides. Skye was once a centre of Norse influence until Medieval times, when the Lords of the Isles brought it into their territory. This was a proud and independent Macdonald Clan who ruled the West of Scotland.
Modern Portree retains much of its distinctive culture, especially in its folk music traditions, but is also a forward looking town with a strong tourist economy. It contains the only secondary school on the Isle of Skye as well as several primary schools. Portree also has a community centre with a swimming pool, a library, games centre and archive. Outdoor activities include hill-walking, mountain biking and angling.
