Stromness (population 1,564) is a town in the mainland of Orkney. Populated since Pictish times, Stromness received its name from the Norse Vikings who settled in the area. Modern Stromness possesses a harbour which connects to Thurso and is connected by a road network to the rest of mainland Orkney. Like much of eastern Scotland, Stromness has a low annual rainfall. In common with the rest of Orkney, the combination of erosion and cliffs provides some distinctive scenery as well as a habitat for diverse wildlife. Seabirds including puffins, gannets and skuas are especially numerous around the Orkney Isles.
Stromness benefits from the tourism industry and has a Golf Club as well as numerous hotels. The Stromness council provides many public services such as a library, primary and secondary education, community centre and a swimming pool. Scapa Flow was an important region during WWI and there is a museum and visitor centre on the neighbouring island of Hoy to commemorate this chapter of Orcadian history.
