Situated on the West Coast of Ross-Shire, Ullapool (population 1,300) benefits from the Gulf Stream, and is surprisingly warm for its latitude. Whilst Ullapool was founded on the herring trade, it has developed into a modern and forward looking town. The Ullapool Book Festival is a noted cultural event, and Ullapool Museum is an important heritage centre.
As well as being a developed town, Ullapool offers primary and secondary education. Due to its coastal position, Ullapool is a ferry terminus and its proximity to the Western Isles means that it benefits both from tourism revenue and from a thriving hospitality industry. Tourists are attracted by the opportunities for sightseeing, cycling and hill-walking as well as the interesting geology and wildlife of the area. The Ullapool Music Festival is a popular destination for folk enthusiasts.
