Kirkcaldy is less than twenty miles north of Edinburgh, with a population of almost 50,000 making this the biggest settlement in Fife. The town's main attractions include a museum, theatre and an annual market, while Kirkcaldy's town centre is the largest in Fife. The recently regenerated High Street is home to the Mercat and Postings shopping centres.
Kirkcaldy has four secondary schools and twelve primary schools, while other educational facilities include a private school and a school for children with learning difficulties. The A92 Dunfermline to Dundee road skims past Kirkcaldy, while its railway station offers regular services to Aberdeen, Inverness, York and London.
