Airdrie is a town within North Lanarkshire, approximately 12 miles east of central Glasgow. Airdrie forms part of a conurbation with its western neighbour Coatbridge, in the district formerly known as Monklands. As of the 2011 Census, Airdrie had a population of 37,032.
Airdrie town centre has changed a great deal in recent decades, with a new road layout and a shift in retail emphasis. Graham Street, the main pedestrianised street, was refurbished in the Noughties. New housing complexes have been built around this conveniently situated commuter town, notably in Chapelhall, Carnbroe and Glenmavis. The 2010 reopening of the Airdrie to Bathgate rail link has also made this a convenient place for commuting to Edinburgh.
