As the historic and modern-day capital of Scotland, Edinburgh has expanded beyond recognition over the last two centuries. The creation of three New Town districts north of Princes Street bequeathed Edinburgh with some of Britain's finest Georgian properties, complementing the Royal Mile and Grassmarket districts. More recently, huge investment has transformed Leith into one of the city's most dynamic areas.
Edinburgh is Scotland's economic and political heart, with numerous affluent suburbs within the north and south of the city boundaries. It is a leading tourist destination thanks to its Castle and the Fringe festival held every August, with direct road and rail links across Scotland and England.
