Shotts is a small rural town in North Lanarkshire, roughly halfway between Glasgow (21 miles) and Edinburgh (29 miles). Its credentials as a commuter town are enhanced by the M8 two miles to the north, while Shotts railway station is the centrepiece of the titular line between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Shotts hosts three primary schools and Calderhead High School, while its main employer is the high-security HMP Shotts.  A variety of local shops and services can be found along Shottskirk Road, including a post office and fire station.
