The compact city of Perth is a Royal Burgh in central Scotland. Sitting on the banks of the River Tay, it is the administrative headquarters of Perth and Kinross Council. With a population of around 50,000, Perth is the county's largest conurbation and can trace its history back to prehistoric times.
Perth's name has been adopted by other settlements around the world, including an equally famous city in Western Australia. Perth is popularly referred to as The Fair City, serving as a retail centre for the surrounding area with a shopping centre and pedestrianised high street hosting many independent and specialist shops.
