The Victorian holiday resort of Dunoon has experienced a renaissance as a tourist destination. Visitors typically arrive by ferry from Gourock and Greenock, by car from the mainland, or by landing at the Dunoon Pier in style on the famous Waverley Paddle Steamer.
The sizeable town of Dunoon lies on the Cowal Peninsula, just to the south of the Holy Loch along the Firth of Clyde. The annual Cowal Highland Gathering attracts hundreds of contestants and thousands of spectators from all over the world. It is held annually across the final weekend in August.
