Laurencekirk is the principal town of the 'Howe o'the Mearns', south of Stonehaven near the Dundee to Aberdeen road. The soil around Laurencekirk is noted for its red hue, signifying rich agricultural land.
Laurencekirk developed into a planned village in the 1770s with the introduction of handloom weaving and the manufacture of snuff boxes. These products were of such high quality that they became famous, and were supplied to royal households. In addition to agricultural engineering, Laurencekirk now has a wide range of community services including shops and banks.
