The former beach resort of Portobello is a coastal suburb of Edinburgh, three miles east of the city centre on the Firth of Forth's southern bank. Sandwiched between the suburbs of Joppa and Craigentinny, Portobello was historically it was a town in its own right, and is still viewed as such by many residents.
Portobello's promenade fronts on to a wide sandy beach. Kayaking and sailing clubs hold annual skiff races here, while beach volleyball is well established outside Portobello swimming baths. August's Big Beach Busk and Portobello Village Fair complement a local market, held monthly in Rosefield Park.
